Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Newcastle
The starting point of this fascinating tour will be Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, a city in the north-east of Englandwhere culture and history are breathed. Its inhabitants are known as Geordies, who have their own dialect. In ancient times it was one of the main forts in the Roman Empire, and today it is an important business and science centre.

Day 2 - Newcastle to Heddon 11 miles | 17,6 km
Today, your walk will be along the River Tyne, a coastal tributary in the north-east of England that begins as two rivers, the South Tyne and the North Tyne.

You'll follow your journey to Heddon-on-the-Wall, a charming village in Northumberland, located on Hadrian's Wall.

Newburn: In case there is no accommodation available in Heddon, you will need to head to Newburn, a town 4.8 kilometres from Heddon. Please note that if you are staying in Newburn, the next day's journey will be reduced.

Day 3 - Heddon to Corbridge 12,8 miles | 20,6 km
On this day you will see Harlow Hill, a small hamlet just over the line of Hadrian's Wall, through which a military road also passes. You'll pass the site of the old Milecastle 16, a Roman fort that served as a guard post on the wall.

Later, you will follow a footpath parallel to the well-known B6318 road.

Day 4 - Corbridge to Chollerford 10,5 miles | 17 km
This will be an ideal day to get to know more about the history of these lands, as you will have the possibility to explore the ruins of an ancient Roman city.

You will be able to visit several attractions that will transport you immediately back in time, including Corbridge Roman Town, a busy settlement that in the past, was one of the main supply centres for Romans and civilians.

Acomb: in the event of there being no availability at Chollerford, we will make arrangements for you to have transferred to Acomb and back to Chollerford the following day to start your route.

Day 5 - Chollerford to Once Brewed 12,7 miles | 20,5 km
Today you can enjoy one of the best stretches of Hadrian's Wall. The first part of the day you will walk near the wall, and after passing Shield, you will be able to explore the ruins and Roman fortresses.

Before you reach your destination, you will have the possibility to visit Vindolanda, one of the forts that guarded the wall.

Day 6 - Once Brewed to Gilsland 9,4 miles | 15,2 km
You will walk through Northumberland National Park and ascend to Winshields Crags, which at 345 metresis the highest point on the route. We recommend that you have your camera on hand, because from there you will have some incredible panoramas.

Then you will continue along a well-preserved stretch of Hadrian's Wall until you reach Gilsland, a small town on the border between Cumbria and Northumberland.

Enjoy Hadrian's Hall at its best, because today you will walk through one of the best conserved parts, you can also contemplate magnificent landscapes typical of this region: lakes and mountains with rugged slopes.

You will end the day in Brampton, a picturesque market town, which is located at the gates of the Roman fort of Birdoswald. From here, you'll get stunning views of the longest continuous stretch of Hadrian's Wall. 

Lanercost or Haytongate: If there is no available accommodation in Brampton, you should head to Lanercost or Haytongate, both of which are approximately 5 kilometres from Brampton. Please note that if you are staying in Lanercost or Haytongate, the next day's distance will be reduced.

Today's walk will be what you will be able to contemplate from Hadrian's Wall, because in this section there is very little left of the wall. In return, you will have the possibility to enjoy typical country landscapes, where peace reigns.

Arriving in Carlisle, the capital of the county of Cumbria, you can visit the Tullie House Museum, an establishment that houses an extensive collection of paintings by important regional and national artists.

Note: The route for this day can be shortened by taking a private transfer from Brampton to Lanercost and then walking to Carlisle.

Although the wall will not be the main feature today, as this section of the trail is dominated by grass, earth and rocks, you will have the chance to visit Beaumont, where you will visit St. Mary's Church, which dates back to the 12th century and was built with stone looted from Hadrian's Wall.

You will then pass through Burgh by Sands, a beautiful and charming village known as the place where King Edward I died, and finally arrive at Boustead Hill.

You will continue your walk amidst the buildings left by the Roman Empire in the region. You will pass Drumburgh Castle, erected in 1307 by Robert le Brun, who used stone from Hadrian's Wall to build it.

Later, you will visit Port Carlisle, where you will find the famous sign indicating the distance to Bowness-on-Solway and other towns.

You will continue to Bowness-on-Solway, a village of just 100 houses, located on the south side of the Solway Firth, which separates England from Scotland.
