Day 1 - Arrival in St Jean Pied de Port

In Saint Jean Pied de Port, you will start this magnificent journey. Upon arrival you will realize why it is the preferred starting point for many pilgrims. It is the perfect place that will allow you to prepare for this journey that you will start on the Camino de Santiago.

Day 2 - St Jean Pied de Port to Valcarlos 7 miles | 12 km

Today's tour will be magnificent because you will enjoy splendid and wonderful views. Along the way you will find slopes, some not so pronounced as others, on paths that will surely allow you a rewarding experience.

Day 3 - Valcarlos to Roncesvalles 9 miles | 14 km

Valcarlos is a charming village located in the north of the Pyrenees, on the French border. Its mountainous landscape together with its cultural richness makes it a unique village on the Camino.

Continue until you reach Roncesvalles, a fascinating village located in the middle of the mountains, that will give you fascinating scenarios to observe and know.

Day 4 - Roncesvalles to Zubiri 12 miles | 20 km

This day will not be very demanding, because most of the time you will walk over flat terrain and cross beautiful forests.

The walk begins in the Sorginaritzaga Forest (or Robledal de las Brujas), named after famous covens in the 16th century.

Later you will ascend to Alto de Mezquiriz, with a height of 920 m, and Alto de Erro, at 800 m.

Then you will descend into Zubiri, the capital of the Esteribar Valley, a place located in a privileged and fascinating natural environment.

Upon arrival you will find the beautiful Puente de la Rabia bridge, a medieval passage over the River Arga.

Today you can choose between two paths to reach your destination: follow the pilgrim route, away from the River Arga, to visit Larrasoana, a small village where you can get to know the Church of San Nicolas de Bari, or continue along the banks of the tributary until you reach Pamplona, capital of Navarra, famous for its traditional and world-famous San Fermin festivals.

Travel & transfers

Our suggestion is to fly to Biarritz airport (BIQ), as it is the closest airport to St. Jean Pied de Port.

From there, you can take a train (train 867321) from "Bayonne" station to St. Jean Pied de Port, operated by "SNCF".

At the airport you will find 24 hour taxis.

You can always check with your travel agent for private transfer options from Biarritz airport to St. Jean Pied de Port.

If you have not found suitable flights to Biarritz airport, a second option would be to fly to San Sebastian airport (EAS).

At the end of your trip in Pamplona, we recommend taking the train. Pamplona (Iruña) station is only 10 minutes from the city center. The train company that operates this line Pamplona-Madrid is "Renfe".

Absolutely! Each traveller has included 1 piece of luggage that we will transfer between your accommodations. It's important that this piece of luggage meets the following criterias:

Maximum weight of 45 lbs (20 kg).
Must be only 1 piece of luggage without any attachments or accessories.
Should not contain valuables, fragile items, food or medications.
Must be correctly identified (booking reference of your trip and the full name of the trip holder).

The approximate luggage delivery time will be at 4:00 PM.

How fit should I be?

You must have good physical endurance to be able to make the most of this walk.

What is the best time of the year to do this trip?

We recommend you take this walking holiday in spring or autumn. However, it is available also from February to November.

How far in advance should I book my trip?

We recommend that you book as soon as you are sure about your dates, as accommodation can fill up very quickly in this area.

What equipment do I need to bring?

How do I get the pilgrim's credential?

The pilgrim's credential can be found upon arrival at your first accommodation. This credential must be stamped in churches, restaurants and hotels during your journey on the Camino de Santiago. At the end of the trip in the city of Santiago, you can obtain the Compostela that certifies you as a pilgrim.

Can some of the longer stages of the itinerary be divided?

Yes, below is a list of all the stages that we can divide, so that you do not have to walk so many daily kilometres:

Roncesvalles to Zubiri (with overnight in Bizkarreta).
Los Arcos to Logroño (with overnight in Viana).
Mazarife to Astorga (with overnight in Hospital de Órbigo).
Rabanal del Camino to Ponferrada (with overnight in El Acebo de San Miguel).
Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro (with overnight in Las Herrerías).
Sarria to Portomarín (with overnight in Ferreiros).

There are some stages that cannot be divided as our quality department has determined that it is not recommended based on our standards. This is because luggage cannot be transported or there are no accommodations available. For the stages you find longer, you can take a taxi in the morning after breakfast, to drop you off at a point along the way where you can guarantee to finish the stage.
