Day 1 - Arrival in Cauterets
The journey begins in Cauterets, a charming spa town nestled in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park. Surrounded by high peaks and with a rich history as a 19th-century tourist destination, Cauterets offers the perfect balance between nature, tradition and mountain hospitality.
Upon arrival, you can settle in at your leisure, stroll through its elegant period architecture and sit on an outdoor terrace to enjoy a local wine accompanied by the typical flavours of south-western France. A relaxed first encounter with Pyrenean culture before embarking on days of unforgettable hiking.
Once you arrive at Toulouse airport, you will need to travel to Lourdes train station, where we will pick you up and transfer you to your accommodation in Cauterets.

Day 2 - Route around Cauterets 7,1 miles I 11,5 km
You will begin your route leaving behind the tranquillity of Cauterets, following the GR10 trail along the Gave River, through lush forests and the constant murmur of water cascading down from the heights. As you head further into the valley, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged, and the sounds of the village give way to birdsong and the murmur of waterfalls hidden among the rocks.
The trail leads you to the Pont d'Espagne, an ancient stone bridge nestled in spectacular surroundings, where the water rushes down in a whirlpool of foam and the air vibrates with the force of nature. From here, you will take the cable car to the Belvédère viewpoint, opening up even more majestic landscapes.
After a short walk, you will reach Lac de Gaube, whose turquoise waters reflect the snow-capped peaks of Vignemale, the highest summit in the French Pyrenees. Here, surrounded by silence and verticality, you can rest, contemplate and absorb the wild beauty that defines these high mountain valleys.
The day ends with a walk back to Pont d'Espagne, from where you will take a local bus back to Cauterets. You can find information about the buses on the liO Occitanie - Hautes-Pyrénées website.

You will start the day by taking the cable car up to Cirque du Lys, an impressive natural formation that opens up like a rock amphitheatre facing the Pyrenean heights. As you rise above the valleys, the views expand: hidden lakes, jagged ridges and forests covering the slopes like a green tapestry.
The trail descends gently, winding through alpine pastures and rocky outcrops, until it reaches the charming Lac d'Ilhéou, whose calm waters invite you to pause, have a picnic or simply soak up the silence and beauty of your surroundings. After this respite, you will join the GR10, the great trail that crosses the Pyrenees from coast to coast, and follow it towards Cauterets.
Please note that the Cirque du Lys cable car operates from approximately the second week of July to the first week of September. If you wish to do the third day's walk, which starts from the top of the cable car, you will need to plan your trip within this period.
However, if you are travelling outside the cable car's operating season, approximately from mid-July to early September, an alternative walking route through the valley (13 km) will be offered, which is equally beautiful and full of contrasts.

Today, one of the most memorable days of the trip awaits you. In the morning, you will take a local bus that will take you to the village of Gavarnie in just 45 minutes, a picture-postcard enclave surrounded by some of the most iconic landscapes in the Pyrenees.
From the centre of the village, you will begin your walk along a path that runs alongside a crystal-clear river, while the mountains rise higher and higher around you. Little by little, the path climbs up the hillside and reveals, almost suddenly, the Cirque du Gavarnie, an immense natural wall carved into the rock and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.
A majestic scene will unfold before you: walls over 1,500 metres high, multiple waterfalls cascading down in sparkling threads and an atmosphere that conveys the geological force that shaped the Pyrenees. Walking to the base of the cirque, you will feel the real scale of this natural monument and the power of the silence that reigns within it.
You will return along the same path to Gavarnie, where you will take the bus again, with the feeling of having visited one of the great treasures of southern Europe.

To reach the starting point of this hiking route, we recommend flying to Toulouse Airport. From there, you will need to take the shuttle bus to catch the train to Lourdes station, where we will pick you up and take you to your first accommodation.
To return to your home town from Luz-Saint-Sauveur, you can fly from Toulouse Airport. First, you will have a transfer included to Lourdes train station, from where you will take a train to Toulouse city centre. Then, you will just need to take the shuttle bus to get to the airport.

To return to your home town from Luz-Saint-Sauveur, you can fly from Toulouse Airport. First, you will have a transfer included to Lourdes train station, from where you will take a train to Toulouse city centre. Then, you will just need to take the shuttle bus to get to the airport.

Absolutely! Each traveller has included 1 piece of luggage that we will transfer between your accommodations. It's important that this piece of luggage meets the following criterias:

What is the best time of year to do this trip?
The route is available from early June to late September, coinciding with the best conditions for exploring this mountain region. June and early July are ideal for nature lovers, with an abundance of wildflowers along the trails. During the summer, temperatures can be warm, although the weather is usually cooler at higher altitudes, making walking still enjoyable. September offers a quieter experience, with fewer visitors on the trails and conditions still very favourable for walking.

What should my physical preparation be?
This route is of medium-high difficulty, making it ideal for people looking for 4 to 6 hours of walking per day with climbs that can be steeper and longer. It is recommended that you are in good physical condition and in good health. Some sections of the walk have uneven terrain, including rocky areas.
