Day 1 - Arrival in Bowness-on-Solway
Start your journey in Bowness-on-Solway, a small, peaceful village at the western end of Hadrian's Wall. With just 100 or so houses and surrounded by the Solway Firth, which marks the natural border between England and Scotland, this corner of Cumbria offers a serene and unique setting in which to begin your journey. Here, where the Roman Wall disappears into the maritime horizon, your westward journey on foot begins.

Day 2 - Bowness-on-Solway to Carlisle 15,2 miles | 24,5 km
You will leave Bowness-on-Solway behind and continue to enjoy the beautiful scenery of this route and the song of the great variety of birds that can be found in this region. You will pass through Burgh by Sands, a beautiful and charming village near Carlisle, also well known as the place where King Edward I died.

Arriving in Brampton, a small market town with local character, you can stroll around the traditional market, visit one of the shops or relax in a local café. A welcoming atmosphere awaits you and everything you need to rest and prepare for the next stages, where the history of the wall will come to the fore.
Lanercost or Haytongate: If there is no availability in Brampton, you should head to Lanercost or Haytongate, both of which are approximately 5 kilometres from Brampton. Please note that if you are staying in Lanercost or Haytongate, your next day's mileage will be reduced.

Day 5 - Gilsland to Once Brewed 8,8 miles | 14,1 km
From Gilsland, a charming village on the border between Cumbria and Northumberland, you will begin one of the most impressive stages of Hadrian's Wall. This exceptionally well-preserved section takes you through the Northumberland National Park, amidst lonely landscapes steeped in history.
The path climbs up to Winshields Crags, the highest point of the entire route at 345m. From there, you'll enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the rolling landscapes of northern England and the line of the wall as it disappears into the horizon. And don't forget to bring your camera - this day offers some of the most iconic images of the entire journey.

Day 6 - Once Brewed to Chollerford 12,3 miles | 19,8 km
On leaving Once Brewed, you will have the option to visit Vindolanda, an exceptionally preserved ancient Roman fort, where you can learn more about life on the frontier of the Empire.
During the tour you will walk close to the wall and, when you reach the Shield area, you will have the opportunity to explore ancient Roman ruins and fortifications, surrounded by landscapes that seem to stand still in time. Finally, you will reach Chollerford, where this unforgettable stage of history and natural beauty will come to an end.
Acomb: in the event of there being no availability at Chollerford, we will make arrangements for you to have transferred to Acomb and back to Chollerford the following day to start your route.

You will pass through Harlow Hill, a small picturesque village that lines the old wall and still retains the outline of a Roman military road.

To get to the starting point of this walking route starting in Bowness-on-Solway, we recommend flying into Newcastle Airport. From there, take the GRN Metro line into the city centre, arriving at Central Station. From there, take a train to Carlisle and, at the bus terminal, take the 93 to the Kings Arms stop.
To return home from Newcastle, simply travel from Newcastle city centre on the GRN Metro line to the airport.
