Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Gilsland
Begin your adventure in the tranquil village of Gilsland, a place full of rural charm and steeped in history. Situated right on the ancient frontier of the Roman Empire, this picturesque spot marks the perfect start to exploring Hadrian's Wall. Before you start your walk, you can take a stroll around the surrounding area, relax in a local café or simply enjoy the typical northern English scenery.

Day 2 - Gilsland to Once Brewed 8,8 miles | 14,1 km
From Gilsland, a charming village on the border between Cumbria and Northumberland, you will begin one of the most impressive stages of Hadrian's Wall. This exceptionally well-preserved section takes you through the Northumberland National Park, amidst lonely landscapes steeped in history.

The path climbs up to Winshields Crags, the highest point of the entire route at 345m. From there, you'll enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the rolling landscapes of northern England and the line of the wall as it disappears into the horizon. And don't forget to bring your camera - this day offers some of the most iconic images of the entire journey.

This charming cottage is located in Northumberland National Park, just a short walk from Hadrian's Wall. Just 200 metres away is the Twice Brewed Inn, where you can enjoy a beer and delicious food.

Day 3 - Once Brewed to Chollerford 12,3 miles | 19,8 km
On leaving Once Brewed, you will have the option to visit Vindolanda, an exceptionally preserved ancient Roman fort, where you can learn more about life on the frontier of the Empire.

During the tour you will walk close to the wall and, when you reach the Shield area, you will have the opportunity to explore ancient Roman ruins and fortifications, surrounded by landscapes that seem to stand still in time. Finally, you will reach Chollerford, where this unforgettable stage of history and natural beauty will come to an end.

Acomb: in the event of there being no availability at Chollerford, we will make arrangements for you to have transferred to Acomb and back to Chollerford the following day to start your route.

Day 4 - Chollerford to Corbridge 9,9 miles | 16 km
After finishing breakfast, you'll leave the north of the wall behind you as you take in spectacular views of the English countryside. Along the way you'll come across Roman fortresses and ruins, relics that tell the story of an empire that left a profound mark on this region.

You'll be able to visit several attractions that will immediately transport you back in time, including Corbridge Roman Town, a vibrant settlement that was once a major supply centre for the Romans and civilians.

At the end of the day, you'll arrive at your final accommodation in the charming village of Corbridge, a place full of character and with a fascinating past. Once an important Roman settlement, today it is a peaceful village full of cobbled streets, stone houses, independent shops and cosy cafes.

    Travel & Transfers

    To get to the starting point of this walking route starting in Gilsland, we recommend flying into Newcastle Airport. From there, take the GRN Metro line into the city centre, arriving at Central Station. From there, take a train to Haltwhistle, and once there, you can take a taxi to Gilsland in about 10 minutes.

    To return home from Corbridge, you can take the train into Newcastle city centre and from Central Station take the GRN Metro line to the airport.
