Overview

Discover the mythical mountainous Pelion Peninsula, located in Thessaly, in the central part of Greece, a lush mountain bordered by the Aegean Sea and adorned with traditional and picturesque villages, which have become charming beach destinations because of its turquoise bays.

Explore the traditional architecture of old houses with narrow windows and decorated walls, or Byzantine churches with wonderful wall paintings. Tour ancient fishing villages on the east coast, where we suggest you try their delicious seafood specialties.

Cross ancient trails and elevated mountain forests between the Aegean Sea and the Gulf of Volos, witnesses to various events of Greek mythology: abode of legendary centaurs, such as Chiron, the wise master of demigods and heroes, and scene from the first beauty contest between Thetis and Eris.

  • Explore Pelion, a peninsula declared a new destination of cultural heritage by the National Hellenic Commission for UNESCO.
  • Discover the picturesque village and beaches where some scenes from the film musical "Mamma Mia" were filmed.
  • Visit the taverns and arhontikas, accommodation in old whitewashed half-timbered mansions.
  • Explore the deep green forest trails and olive groves in the so-called "Land of the Centaurs".
  • Try bean soup and spetzofai, a spicy blend of sausages and peppers.

    Travel & Transfers

To get to Portaria, you must travel to Pelion and then to Volos. To do this we propose several alternatives: to get to Volos International Airport, Athens or Thessaloniki International Airport.

From Volos Airport, you can take a bus to the town of Volos, and then take another to Portaria. By car from the airport, Volos is easily accessible from the E75 route.

If you arrive in Athens, you must take the KTEL bus to Volos at Liossion Bus Station in Athens. You can also take a train from Athens Airport to SKA and connect to the Athens-Larissa line there. If you prefer, you can take the Larissa line directly from Athens city centre, a journey of approximately 5 hours.

Another option is in your own car or a rented one, driving along the Greek national road Athina-Thessaloniki, following the route to Lamia, Larissa and then Volos, this trip would take you approximately 4 hours.

From Thessaloniki Airport, you can take a bus to Volos or a connecting train in Larissa. To get to Portaria we suggest you take a taxi, although you can also take a bus that will take you, in just 20 minutes, to the beginning of this beautiful route.

For the return from Milies, and depending on your next destination, we suggest going to Volos Airport, the closest to 1 hour approximately by car. Thessaloniki Airport is 3 hours away, and Athens Airport, approximately 4.
