Overview

For some, these are the last 100 km of the well-known Camino Sanabres or Camino de la Plata de Portugal, a route that begins on the Via de la Plata and that has Santiago de Compostela as its destination.

Explore the route that medieval pilgrims traced to avoid heavy snowfall in the mountains at O Cebreiro, heading to Santiago in winter times along the Camino Frances, and which has been a natural path of communication between El Bierzo and Galicia since Roman times.

  • Explore one of the richest routes for landscapes, culture and gastronomy.
  • Relaxing in the thermal water fountains in the Roman city of Ourense, christened the "City of Gold".
  • Try the famous artisan bread in San Cristovo de Cea.
  • Tour Lalin, the municipality with the most castros in Galicia, pre-Roman fortified villages from the late Bronze and Iron Ages.

    FAQs

The route is catalogued with a medium-low difficulty level, where you will travel agricultural or earthy trails with demanding ascents and descents, on daily walks of approximately 23 km per day.

For this reason, it is important that you are in good physical condition and have an active lifestyle. If not, we suggest preparing yourself with walks and/or cardio exercises approximately 2 months before starting the trip.

This route is for you if you like the great contrasts between nature, culture and history, as well as the most amazing natural, archaeological and landscape heritage of all the pilgrim routes.

It is also ideal for you if you enjoy trips with a spiritual and historical sense, the oceanic climate of the Atlantic and experiences by places of legends of Santiago the Apostle, while touring Roman cities and towns and trying out the variety of tapas, wines, "pinchos", sandwiches and typical Galician food.

Any time between March and October will give you an amazing experience. May is undoubtedly one of the best months to complete the route, as the temperatures are moderate, as is the influx of pilgrims.

In spring, mornings and evenings are usually cool and during the day the temperatures are pleasant. In autumn, the unrivalled landscape of the Via de la Plata route is dyed in sepia colours, which is a spectacle that brightens the route from start to finish.

We recommend that you book as soon as you are sure about your dates, as accommodation can fill up very quickly in this area.

Once you make your reservation we will send you all the detailed information about the specific equipment you need for this route, considering recommendations for shoes, boots, clothes and a day-to day backpack.
